Comments on the Former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium (Part 1)
Although I myself am not from Takamatsu City, I actually have two great mentors who are from there. They are Professor Osamu Matsuoka, my mentor at Nagoya University, and Professor Toshihiko Kimura, my mentor in structural design; the two were also classmates at the former Takamatsu Middle School. As is widely known, Professor Matsuoka is a world-renowned researcher in the field of shell and spatial structures, while Professor Kimura is a once-in-a-generation, world-class structural engineer who represented postwar Japan. I was fortunate enough to inherit, in the best possible way, the academic expertise in shell and spatial structures from Professor Matsuoka and the creative approach to structural design in professional practice from Professor Kimura. There is no doubt that I am who I am today thanks to these two great mentors.
For these reasons, I have harbored a deep sense of familiarity and affection for Takamatsu City for over half a century, and I recall visiting the former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium—the subject of this discussion—on numerous occasions. In light of the powerful and symbolic form of this building, constructed in 1964, as well as the significant technical and historical value of its innovative suspended roof structure—a prime example of shell and spatial structures—I decided to join as one of the initiators of this project. I will elaborate on the details in my comments starting with the second installment.
