Comments on the Former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium (Part 2)

The former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium (1964), also known as the “Ship Gymnasium” due to its distinctive exterior, has long been beloved by the citizens of Takamatsu. The architectural design was by Kenzo Tange, and the structural design was by Tsuyoshi Okamoto.

The main space—the arena and spectator seating area—is elevated off the ground by four large columns supporting a pair of side beams and gable beams, while the ancillary facilities are concentrated in the central lower portion of the first floor. The saddle-shaped curved suspended roof structure covering this main space is formed by placing 50-mm-thick prestressed concrete slabs between a cable net with a 1.2-meter grid (suspension: 12.4-φ strands; support: 6-φ steel rods), which are then integrated by filling the joints with concrete. Here, the roof’s dead load is primarily transmitted by the concave suspension members, while the convex support members play a supplementary role in stabilizing the roof surface during typhoons and other severe weather events.

The 1950s marked the heyday of reinforced concrete (RC) shell structures for large spaces, but suspended roof structures using cable nets emerged as a lightweight alternative that did not require scaffolding, replacing the labor-intensive RC shells. Incidentally, in the United States, a cable-net suspended roof structure with a saddle-shaped curved surface and a large span of nearly 100 meters was realized quite early on at the Raleigh Coliseum in North Carolina (1953; architect: Novicki; structural engineer: Sevillado). Tsuyoshi Okamoto, who was in charge of the structural design for the former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium, drew on successful overseas examples such as the Raleigh Coliseum. Even before the Kagawa project, he collaborated with architect Junzo Sakakura on the Saijo City Gymnasium (completed in 1961, demolished in 2012) and the Ichimura Memorial Gymnasium (formerly the Saga Prefectural Gymnasium, completed in 1962), realizing Japan’s first full-scale suspended roof structures and earning him recognition as a leading authority on suspended roof structures at the time.

These suspended roof structures are valuable examples that led to the development of shell and spatial structures in Japan today, and their technical and historical value is highly regarded by experts.
