In 2013, a Kenzo Tange retrospective exhibition (Editor’s note: “Kenzo Tange: Tradition and Creation—From the Seto Inland Sea to the World,” held at the Kagawa Prefectural Museum) was held. It was there that Fumihiko Maki and his classmate Koji Kamiya met, and they reportedly began discussing, “The Sydney Opera House is a World Heritage Site, so why isn’t the Yoyogi National Stadium? Let’s form an association to have Yoyogi designated as a World Heritage Site.”
Shortly thereafter, I was approached and asked to help. With the addition of Mamoru Kawaguchi—who had actually been in charge of the structural design for Yoyogi under Yoshikatsu Tsuboi—as well as architectural historians Yoshiyuki Yamana and Saikaku Toyokawa, we began holding informal meetings. In 2016, the association (the General Incorporated Association for the Promotion of the Registration of the National Yoyogi Stadium as a World Heritage Site, or GYSC) was officially established.
The anecdotes about the Tange Laboratory from the 1960s that I heard at this meeting were incredibly fascinating, and I came to realize just how important it is to preserve the Yoyogi building and have it designated as a World Heritage Site in order to pass on the legacy of Japan’s unique postwar era to future generations.
The Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium was completed in 1964, the same year as Yoyogi.
These two structures should be viewed as a significant pair, and by comparing them, the distinctive characteristics of Japan as a nation and its culture become clearly apparent.
Therein lies the issue of Tokyo versus the regions, and East versus West; along these axes, we can see how the team surrounding Mr. Tange sincerely addressed these challenges and produced outstanding solutions.
If we can preserve the Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium from this broad historical perspective, I believe it will leave a message that is both vital and beneficial for the young people who will shape Japan’s future.
